Proactive triggers

Open the chat with a tailored message after a visitor has been on a page for a while.

What proactive triggers do

Most visitors won't click a chat bubble on their own. A proactive trigger nudges them. After someone's been on a page for a set number of seconds, the chat opens by itself with a message you've written.

It's the digital version of a shop assistant noticing you've been looking at the same shelf for a while and asking if you need a hand. Used well, it turns browsers into conversations.

Setting one up

Go to Settings, then Proactive triggers. Add a rule with three things: which page it applies to, how long to wait before opening, and the message to show.

The page is matched by its address, and you can use a wildcard so one rule covers a whole section. For example, a rule for your pricing page might wait 20 seconds then say 'Got a question about which plan fits? I'm here to help.' A rule for a course page might say 'Want to check the entry requirements? Ask away.'

Keeping it tasteful

Don't pounce. Give people a few seconds to read the page first, and keep the message specific to what they're looking at. A trigger fires at most once per visit, so nobody gets nagged.

Write the message in your own voice and make it about them, not about you. A good trigger feels helpful. A pushy one just gets closed.
